The One Leadership Metric That Actually Drives Team Performance

Employees conversing

Team performance comes down to leadership, but that doesn't mean what you think it means. When I say leadership, I don't mean the power of personality, the level of intelligence, or how caring a particular leader may be. All these traits are helpful to leaders but don't necessarily drive performance. The singular metric that drives team performance is CLARITY.

Why Clarity Is So Hard to Achieve

Clarity is hard to achieve. Our society is marked by distraction, and it has never been easier to find "experts" to listen to. This cultural phenomenon has a direct impact on SMB teams. Your employees are looking for someone to follow and if you aren't providing clarity and expertise for your team, a myriad of voices will become the unintended advisors for your business. Thus, the need for clarity is both a cultural and practical reality of your team.

Start With Yourself: A Leader's Clarity Comes First

How does a leader drive clarity? First and most importantly the leader themselves needs to have clarity. You should know and be able to concisely answer the question: Where is the organization heading? If you, as a leader, don't have clarity, it is more than OK but gaining clarity should be prioritized. Dominion Consulting can help you with this problem whether it be financial, growth, or people oriented. Recently a business owner said of working with Dominion Consulting "We know Dominion is the piece that will take our company to the next level."

Communicate the Vision and Make It Personal

Once you have established clarity in your own mind, then the next step is internal communication. Most of your team doesn't know what you know or see what you see. Your task is to bring everyone on board with the vision. Next, break the company goals down in a way that is approachable, understandable, and relatable for each team member. In other words, each team member should be able to understand what their focus is and how it plays in the overall direction of the company. This specific direction provides positive momentum for the company and reduces frustration for team members. They know exactly what is expected of them and what success looks like.

Unclear Teams Have Unclear Leaders

If the team isn't clear, it's because the leader has not provided clarity. The most successful teams I have been a part of had a range of talent and asymmetric cultures, but all had great clarity.
